Why Essential Oil?
Essential Oils : Essential oils are extracted by two main methods. By simple expression or pressure - as in the case of most citrus oils or by steam, water or dry distillation. The more plant material it takes to make a litre of oil the more expensive the oil. E.g. It takes 1 ton of Rose petals to produce 300g of oil while it takes about 50kg of lavender to produce 1½ litres of oil. Citrus fruits produce an even larger ratio of oil - as a result Rose oil - or Rose absolute is one of the moist expensive oils while the citrus oils tend to be much cheaper.
Aromatic plants have been in use for thousands of years - aromatherapy as a therapy is more recent. In the early part of 20th century a French chemist discovered by accident how lavender oil rapidly healed a severe burn and went on to find that many oils were more effective in their totality than in their individual chemical components.
The Essential oils are absorbed through the skin for their therapeutic properties as well as through our sense of smell.
Precautions : With the exception of Lavender and Tea Tree most essential oils need to be diluted in a carrier oil before use. Care should be taken during pregnancy, or people using Homeopathic remedies. Epileptic, babies, high blood pressure - consult with a qualified aroma therapist or doctor before using essential oils. Most Citrus oils are photosensitive except Grapefruit, so do not use if going out into the sun afterwards.
Carrier Oils : Apricot Kernel; Sunflower; Soya Oil; Sweet Almond; Grape seed; Avocado; Wheatgerm, Rose Hip and Jojoba. Most carrier oils are inexpensive with the exception of Jojoba due to it’s extraction process. Locally produced oils are also becoming available eg. Baobab, Macadamia Nut and Marula.
